Tisiphone loves spending her days playing poker in the underworld, far away from mortals and all the trouble they cause - and all the terrible mistakes they make. Unfortunately for this goddess, her sister Alecto has vanished in Las Vegas - and the gods of Olympus believe only Tisi can find her and bring her back. To make matters worse, they force her to partner up with a mortal recently deceased FBI agent Archer Mays. With all these challenges, how can a Fury keep her temper?

On their quest to track down the missing goddess, Tisi and Archer battle danger, demons, and even their simmering attraction to one another - until a sinister plot unfolds that could devastate humans and gods alike. Now, Tisiphone must set everything right within a few days, or find herself trapped in the mortal world she despises...forever.

Sin City Goddess Secret Goddess Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Barbra Annino Valerie Gilbert Books

I don't much like cities, and I really dislike Vegas. I don't like conspicuous consumption, gambling, crazy busy cities, etc. As the main character, Tisiphone, says, "I would rather dig out my own eyeballs and feed them to a raccoon through a straw than go to Las Vegas." I can deal with death, but the idea of torture really makes me squirm. So why did I even think about getting this book, which has both Vegas and torture? Because I discovered Barbra Annino's writing last year and she hasn't let me down yet. She is a skilled plotmaster (yes, I'm making this word up to describe what she does). So, Sin City Goddess is set in Vegas and there is torture in it. Why am I ok with that in this book, to the ;point where I thoroughly enjoyed the book? Well, first, these were both important to the philosophical and psychological aspects of the book (something that Annino does a great job of bringing to her books). Second, the torture was presented, so that you knew it was happening, and very much felt it's effects on the characters, but it wasn't presented as gratuitous violence. But, there is much more to the book than that.

As I said, Annino brings a wonderful feminine (that is, female, not "weak"), philosophical / psychological aspect to her writings, even though her series are quite different from each other in other ways. Here's a taste from this book, "It was Athena who had shown me the power of mercy, forgiveness, and meditation. She had taught me how to gain peace and strength from the natural surroundings that appealed to me, like the water and the moon. In other words, it was Athena who had taught me how to subdue my fury. Her gray eyes gazed into mine as I took a few deep breaths, imagining all the noisy electronics fading away, gently lapping waves taking their place." Tisiphone uses this to center herself as she works to fight evil. Real evil. I won't spoil the plot by revealing more here.

The plot is captivating and unpredictable. If the quality of the writing wasn't enough to keep me reading (WHICH IT IS!), curiosity about what happens next would.

Annino wraps the book up with a note telling us about writing the book and offers, "Whatever the reason, I hope this book encourages you to take back your power, no matter what you've battled." This book does have much to offer along this line. Eagerly awaiting the next book in the series and very curious as to whether I will be meeting a new main character or following Tisiphone to New Orleans!

Sin City Goddess Secret Goddess Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Barbra Annino Valerie Gilbert Books Reviews

I loved the story and characters. This new series is a little more serious, less humorous, than the Stacy Justice series. But it is just as awesome. The bad guys in the book were seriously bad, so there was a good bit of suspense there. But the book was in no way "dark" which was a relief. While their was not a lot of humor, there was some, and the quirky characters gave a lighter feel to the suspenseful nature of the storyline. It was a great read.
I bought this book on a whim; it just sounded like the sort of thing I would enjoy as a break from the far more serious reading that I often do. I loved it and hated to see it come to an end but am glad it is just the first entry in a new series by the prolific Ms Annino. Since anyone can just go and read the plot summary, I won't attempt to summarize it here.
This is a character driven story and succeeds well since Ms Annino can really create filled out, believable characters, even when the two protagonists are a minor Goddess and a recently deceased FBI agent. Together, they must solve a murder while dark forces are gathering and could change the world in a way that would be disastrous for its current population. There are many twists and turns which keep the reader guessing as the story unfolds. The reader can't help but come to love the main characters and Ms Annino's unique perspective on ordinary life and her wicked sense of humor. This book would make a great summer read and comes with my highest recommendation.
I've read a couple of Barbra Annino's Stacy Justice stories. This sounded interesting because it involved the Greek gods.

I was not disappointed.

Annino is wise and sticks to lesser gods for the main characters. In this case, the Furies, aka the Erinyes, with the focus on Tisiphone. She is the avenger of murder. Her sister Megaera (jealousy) and Alecto (unceasing) head to Vegas for a break from the underworld entrance. Tisi is called in to find Alecto after she goes missing on the trip. She is paired with a recently dead FBI agent Archer Mays. Turns out Archer has a 'in' on the particular case, that is what got him killed.

I enjoyed the twists and turns. I also liked the use of different voices in some chapters. Made it interesting. And Stacy Justice even makes a cameo. One other thing I find interesting is always managing to get in a very large dog as a character, in this case, Cerberus. Of course he cannot appear in the mortal world as his three-headed self so...

If you enjoy mysteries with a twist and the world of the Greek gods, go ahead and get this one. I hear Annino already has another in the works, New Orleans.
It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of mythology, it was my first love and passion as a young child, and while this book didn't delve into the mythological aspect too much, it was just enough to give the story extra spice! I personally enjoyed all of the characters involved and the twist of the main villain was perfect. I enjoyed the humor in the commentary and how far removed Tisi was from society. Definitely recommend this book! I can't tell if it's part of a series or not, but if it is, I hope to read more!
I enjoyed each aspect of Sin City Goddess. The mythological side as well as the mystery side, they are blended together wonderfully. Reading about Greek Gods characters when they are humanized is is something I enjoy and Barbra does a wonderful job of doing that. Tisi is an awesome character. Being a Fury she's a badass and tough as nails but we get to see her big heart and her compassionate side as well.
I also enjoyed Stacy making a cameo appearance in this book, Just as Tisi has made a small cameo appearance in the Stacy Justice series. Maybe there will be books in the future that incorporate both sets of characters. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.
